Only Rp5,000, Black Glutinous Rice Bolu at Jepara 1 Square is Guaranteed to Be Addictive

Jepara Kartininews.com - For many people, bolu (sponge cake) is a familiar treat. However, bolu with a dominant black color is still relatively unknown and rarely tried by the public, even though this snack is currently going viral.

In Jepara, right on the east side of Alun-Alun Jepara 1, under the Tugu Gapura Pecinan Jepara, there is a small stall selling black glutinous rice bolu.

The stall belongs to Vigi Dwi Saputro (37), a resident of Desa Kecapi, Kecamatan Tahunan, Kabupaten Jepara, who has only been selling for about the past month.

His stall is simple. There’s only a square steamer placed on a table. Next to it are stacks of boxes filled with black glutinous rice bolu.

Despite its simplicity, Vigi’s stall is quite busy with customers. People come one after another to try the black glutinous rice bolu, which is still rarely found in the Jepara area.

This is also the reason Vigi decided to sell black glutinous rice bolu, even though he still works as a vehicle marketer at a private company since 2008.

“This black glutinous rice bolu is unique and almost no one is selling it in Jepara,” Vigi said when met at his stall on Friday (5/6/2026).

To promote his product, Vigi usually goes live on TikTok while selling.

From those live streams, Vigi admits he often gets unique comments that make his live account lively and attract many buyers.

“Because it’s still rare, many people aren’t familiar with it. Sometimes when they see my live, people think I’m selling tires or pots. But that’s exactly what makes it fun and crowded,” he said.

Vigi doesn’t make the bolu alone. He is assisted by his wife, who works as a nurse at one of the hospitals in Jepara.

In a day, Vigi usually produces around 200 pieces of bolu made from pure black glutinous rice flour without any other flour mixtures.

“The price is Rp5,000 each. We only sell two variants: cheese and chocolate. We don’t offer too many flavors so customers don’t get confused when choosing,” he said.

Meanwhile, one customer, Rahma Fitriani (18), said the black glutinous rice bolu has a unique taste. The texture is soft, but you can still feel the grain from the glutinous rice flour, giving it a distinctive sensation when eaten.

“The taste is unique. The texture is soft but different from regular bolu. I’ve actually wanted to try it for a long time and just found someone selling it in Jepara,” Rahma said.

Vigi’s black glutinous rice bolu is open every day from 5:00 PM WIB until sold out. The stall is located on the east side of Alun-Alun Jepara 1.
