Indonesia Coral Day in Sabang Strengthens Commitment to Protect Coral Reefs
Sabang – The underwater beauty of Weh Island served as the backdrop for strengthening environmental conservation commitment during the commemoration of Indonesia Coral Day in Sabang City, Aceh.
The event, held at Hawk's Nest Resort, Gampong Krueng Raya, on Monday (11/5/2026), included the signing of a joint commitment to protect the living environment and coral reef ecosystem by government officials, Forkopimda (regional leadership coordination forum), environmental communities, and the public.
Deputy Mayor of Sabang, Suradji Junus, expressed appreciation for the collaboration of various parties in strengthening concern for environmental preservation and Sabang’s marine wealth.
“On behalf of myself and the Sabang City Government, we extend our highest appreciation to all parties who have collaborated to make this Indonesia Coral Day event a success. This moment is not merely a ceremony, but a reminder that Sabang’s marine wealth and coral reefs must be protected together for the future of our children and grandchildren,” he said.
According to Suradji, Sabang has great marine tourism potential with its marine park areas and diverse marine life that attract tourists. Therefore, environmental preservation must be a shared responsibility of the government, communities, and environmental activists.
“We hope there will be no more activities that damage the marine environment, such as blast fishing or coral reef destruction. Sabang’s nature is the region’s main asset, especially for the development of tourism and fisheries sectors, which are the livelihoods of the people,” he added.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Aceh Regional Board of LPLHI-KLHI, Nasri Saputra, said that Indonesia Coral Day is commemorated every May 8 as a momentum to increase public awareness of coral reef conservation and the environment.
“We hope this Indonesia Coral Day momentum will not only be a ceremonial activity but will truly increase public awareness to continue caring for the environment. Because by protecting the environment, we are also protecting the sustainability of life itself,” Nasri said.
Chairman of the Sabang Regional Board of LPLHI-KLHI, Syukri, added that Klah Island has great underwater tourism potential and needs proper management and adequate facilities.
“Klah Island has an extraordinary underwater paradise, with hundreds of species of fish and ‘Nemo’ areas that are unique attractions. We hope this area can develop into a new tourist destination in Sabang while maintaining its natural preservation,” he said.
The activity, initiated by the Indonesian Environmental Rescue Institute – Marine, Forest, and Industrial Areas, was also attended by Forkopimda elements, TNI/Polri (military and police), women’s organizations, environmental observers, community leaders, diving communities, and fishermen.
In addition to the joint commitment signing, the series of activities included an underwater cleanup action around Klah Island as a form of concern for preserving the marine ecosystem and coral reefs in Sabang City.
Through this activity, all attending parties declared their commitment to continue supporting the preservation of coastal areas, seas, and coral reefs as part of efforts to maintain environmental sustainability while developing regional tourism.
