Lamporan Night in Kunden Village, Blora, Shows Barongan and Torch Dance Together

Blora Kartininews.com - The tradition was held with the attendance of hundreds of residents from Kunden Village, Blora Subdistrict, Blora Regency, Central Java, on Thursday evening (2/7/2026). The tradition was carried out with the aim of tolak balakk (warding off misfortune), commonly known as lamporan. It can also be interpreted as an expression of gratitude and a prayer for an abundant harvest, lawful sustenance, blessings, and good health throughout the year.

This longstanding tradition of the Kunden villagers has been passed down through generations and remains strong even in the modern era. It was enlivened by brightly glowing torches and a lively procession featuring barongan art performances that paraded around the village area.

The traditional event began in the afternoon with residents from various neighborhood associations (RT and RW) gathering in Kunden Village. The peak of the tolak balakk ritual was wrapped in a sacred atmosphere as a joint prayer was offered solemnly to God Almighty.

Through this collective prayer, the residents hope that through the lamporan performance, all elements of Kunden Village society will always be granted safety, kept away from all diseases, and blessed with abundant crops during this year’s harvest season. The excitement peaked as the torches were lit.

The glowing light from the flaming torches, combined with the agile and dynamic movements of the barongan procession, created a captivating visual attraction for the community all along the lamporan parade route.

The barongan art performance, an iconic cultural symbol of Blora, appeared magical as it accompanied the steps of the participating residents. The sacredness and preservation of this tradition drew special attention from local security and order officers.

Mulyono, a member of the Linmas (civilian security) in Kunden Village, expressed his hope that this noble annual event would continue to be preserved.

“We really hope that the lamporan tradition, which is held every year, will attract more interest from the younger generation. This tradition should not be abandoned, as it is a precious legacy from our ancestors that we must continue to nurture together,” said Mulyono during a break in securing the event.

Meanwhile, Sakti, a cultural enthusiast, stated that the presence of the lamporan or tolak balak tradition in Kunden Village is clear proof that local wisdom and spiritual values remain a strong foundation in community life in Blora Regency.

“This serves as tolak balak to cleanse the local area from dangers and plagues,” he said.
