Mentawai Prepares Surfers for QS6000 2026
Tuapejat – The Bupati Cup surfing contest has become a selection event for local Mentawai surfers aiming for the international QS6000 Mentawai Pro 2026 competition, scheduled to take place in Katiet next August.
This was stated by the Deputy Regent of the Mentawai Islands when officially opening the Bupati Cup Surfing Contest Event – Road to QS6000 Mentawai Pro 2026 in the Mapaddegat area on Tuesday (19/5/2026).
Around 40 participants, consisting of male and female surfers from Mentawai, competed in the contest. From this event, four male surfers and four female surfers will be selected to receive the opportunity to compete via wildcard or special tickets at the international QS6000 Mentawai Pro 2026.
“We are encouraging local surfers to participate in international competitions through wildcards or special tickets. They will later compete directly against professional surfers from around the world,” he said.
He emphasized that Mentawai is the only region in Indonesia scheduled to host an international surfing competition in the Qualification Series (QS) 6000 category in 2026.
According to him, the surfing event is not merely a sporting activity but is also expected to deliver economic benefits to the community through the tourism sector.
“This surfing event is not just about sports, but also about creating economic impact for the community through tourism events. We invite the public to come and purchase products from local MSMEs available at the event venue,” he said.
Through this surfing contest, the Mentawai Islands Regency is demonstrating its readiness to host an international surfing event while strengthening its position as a world-class tourism destination.
