Student from Lumajang Promotes Tumpak Sewu in China
Lumajang – Tumpak Sewu Waterfall in Lumajang Regency, East Java Province, has once again attracted attention, this time through a presentation by a student from Lumajang who is currently studying in China.
Muhammad Afif Darell Ozora Toga (17), also known by his Chinese name Li Zunfeng, introduced one of Lumajang Regency’s flagship destinations in a cultural and educational presentation attended by students from various countries.
In his presentation, Afif showcased the beauty of Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, located on the border between Lumajang and Malang Regencies. The footage drew the attention of participants and sparked curiosity about Indonesia’s natural wealth. The moment served not only as a means to promote the tourist destination but also to introduce the region’s identity and potential to the international community through an educational setting.
This phenomenon shows that regional promotion can be carried out in various ways, including by young people who carry pride in their hometowns to the global stage.
Lumajang Regent, Indah Amperawati expressed appreciation for the student’s initiative. According to her, the younger generation plays an important role in introducing the region’s potential amid an increasingly interconnected world.
“Young people are an important part of Lumajang’s future image. When they bring their hometown’s name with pride into international spaces, it becomes a real contribution to building a positive image of Indonesia,” said Indah Amperawati on Wednesday (17/6/2026).
She believes the strength of regional promotion lies not only in the beauty of tourist destinations but also in the narratives built and conveyed by the people themselves.
She added that young people can serve as bridges between local potential and global attention through various interaction spaces, including the world of education.
Indah further noted that the more young people pursue education outside their region or abroad, the greater the opportunity to introduce the region’s potential more widely and sustainably.
“When young people love their homeland, they will become storytellers about Lumajang wherever they are,” she said.
She also emphasized that Tumpak Sewu is not only known as a natural tourist destination but has also become a symbol of regional pride that can be introduced to the world through the stories and experiences of its people.
“That cool young man loves Lumajang by spreading good news about Lumajang,” she affirmed.
The story illustrates that in the era of globalization, even classrooms abroad can become effective promotional media for introducing Indonesia’s potential and culture to the world.
In front of students from Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, and several other Asian countries, Darell chose to share his personal experience visiting Tumpak Sewu rather than presenting general information about Indonesia.
“Because I have been to Tumpak Sewu and experienced its beauty firsthand, I wanted my international friends to also feel the charm of Lumajang. I want them to come and see for themselves the natural beauty we have,” Darell said via text message on Wednesday (17/6/2026).
In his presentation, he displayed panoramic views of Tumpak Sewu Waterfall on the border of Lumajang and Malang Regencies. The natural beauty captured the participants’ attention and sparked interest in Indonesia.
Beyond promoting the tourist destination, Darell also introduced local culture and cuisine to the participants. He talked about sayur kelor (moringa vegetable) and tempeh as part of everyday Indonesian life.
“When I told them about sayur kelor and tempeh, they were curious and wanted to try it. They said traditional foods like that are interesting and different,” he said.
According to Darell, the positive response from the students led to a broader discussion, ranging from natural beauty to the social life and culture of Indonesian society. Several participants even expressed interest in visiting Indonesia to see the tourist attractions firsthand.
“I’m proud that Lumajang has such captivating nature. It motivates me to keep introducing Lumajang to my international friends,” he said. (red)
