Lompong Sagu Kuranji: A Traditional Minangkabau Delicacy That Remains Special

Padang Kartininews.com — Amid the proliferation of modern and trendy food, traditional Minangkabau cuisine continues to hold a special place in the hearts of the community. This is reflected in the enduring business of Titin Agustina, whose Lompong Sagu and Palai Bada enterprise has remained in demand for more than two decades.

Located on Jalan Muhammad Hatta, Pasar Ambacang, RT 01 RW 01, Kuranji District, this traditional culinary business has been operating since 2000 and stands as an example of the resilience of local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in preserving the authentic flavors of Minangkabau heritage.

Titin Agustina revealed that the business she now runs was a family legacy passed down from her mother-in-law. Drawing on experience and a commitment to maintaining authentic taste, she has strived to keep traditional cuisine alive amid an increasingly competitive market.

"I continued the business from my mother-in-law. We have been running the Lompong Sagu and Palai Bada business for quite a long time — from 2000 until now," said Titin when met at her place of business on Tuesday (23/6/2026).

According to Titin, the key to the business's survival lies not merely in sales, but in consistently preserving the original recipes passed down through generations. She believes that authentic flavor is the primary strength that cannot easily be displaced by modern food trends.

"I continue to uphold the tried-and-true recipe from my mother-in-law. Even though many trendy snacks have emerged, our products are still sought after because of their distinctive taste," she said.

The unique flavors and consistently maintained quality have kept Lompong Sagu and Palai Bada Rumah Gadang in high demand. Not only local Padang residents, but also those who have moved away and return to their hometown often stop by to reconnect with the flavors of home.

In addition to running the business independently, Titin is also a member of the Pasar Ambacang Kuranji SME group, which operates under the guidance of the Padang City Cooperative and SME Office. She considers government mentoring an important source of support for micro-business owners to keep growing and adapting.

Traditional culinary MSMEs like this are seen as having a strategic role — not only in driving the local economy, but also in keeping regional cultural identity alive amid the changes of the times.

At the end of the conversation, Titin invited the public to continue supporting local products and to help preserve traditional Minangkabau cuisine.

"For those of you in Padang or living away from home, please stop by and buy some Lompong Sagu," she said warmly.

The survival of a business that has endured for more than 25 years is proof that traditional cuisine never loses its charm. As long as authentic taste and quality are maintained, ancestral food heritage will continue to live on from generation to generation.
